چکیده

We consider the problem of scheduling jobs with given release times and due dates on a single machine to minimize the maximum job lateness. It is NP-hard and remains such if the maximal job processing time is unrestricted and there is no constant bound on the difference between any job release times. We give a polynomial-time solution of the version in which the maximal job processing time and the differences between the job release times are bounded by a constant, which are restrictions that naturally arise in practice. Our algorithm reveals the inherent structure of the problem and also gives conditions when it is able to find an optimal solution unconditionally.

An Optimal Incremental Algorithm for Minimizing Lateness with Rejection

This paper re-examines the classical problem of minimizing maximum lateness which is defined as follows: given a collection of n jobs with processing times and due dates, in what order should they be processed on a single machine to minimize maximum lateness? The lateness of a job is defined as its completion time minus its due date. This problem can be solved easily by ordering the jobs in non...

An Approximate Pareto Set for Minimizing the Maximum Lateness and Makespan on Parallel Machines

We consider the two-parallel machines scheduling problem, with the aim of minimizing the maximum lateness and the makespan. Formally, the problem is defined as follows. We have to schedule a set J of n jobs on two identical machines. Each job i ∈ J has a processing time pi and a delivery time qi. Each machine can only perform one job at a given time. The machines are available at time t = 0 and...

A polynomial-time algorithm for a special case of minimizing the lateness on a single machine

We study the problem of scheduling jobs with release times and due-dates on a single machine with the objective to minimize the maximal job lateness. This problem is strongly NP-hard, however it is known to be polynomially solvable for the case when the processing times of some jobs are restricted to either p or 2p, for some integer p. We present a polynomial-time algorithm when job processing ...

Solving Single Machine Sequencing to Minimize Maximum Lateness Problem Using Mixed Integer Programming

Despite existing various integer programming for sequencing problems, there is not enoughinformation about practical values of the models. This paper considers the problem of minimizing maximumlateness with release dates and presents four different mixed integer programming (MIP) models to solve thisproblem. These models have been formulated for the classical single machine problem, namely sequ...

Minimizing the Number of Tardy Jobs in the Single Machine Scheduling Problem under Bimodal Flexible and Periodic Availability Constraints

In single machine scheduling problems with availability constraints, machines are not available for one or more periods of time. In this paper, we consider a single machine scheduling problem with flexible and periodic availability constraints. In this problem, the maximum continuous working time for each machine increases in a stepwise manner with two different values allowed. Also, the durati...
